Ly Son Island – wonderful place to visit in Vietnam
Ly Son Island is the only island which belonged to Quang Ngai Province in the central Vietnam. Ly Son Island is about nautical miles from Sa Ky Port. Thanks to the upgrade of infrastructure recently, Ly Son Island become more and more famous for travelers and it will be wonderful place for holiday in Vietnam.
WHERE IS LY SON ISLAND?
Ly Son Island is the district off South Central Coast of Vietnam, belonging to Quang Ngai Province. Ly Son covers approximately 9.97 km² of land, on two off-shore volcanic islands in the East Sea, and a few islets. The main island has three prominent craters, the largest of which is Mount Thoi Loi. Hydrothermal waters on Ly Son Island provide heat for the local power plant. The secondary island is known as Little Island and is also well populated.
Based on researches, Ly Son Island was formed about 30 million years ago by volcano activities, leaving Ly Son five mountains now which are famous places to visit for all travelers coming to Ly Son. The volcano activities also leave Ly Son unique and truly beautiful landscapes, ever-green vegetation and spectacular beaches. Ly Son is used to be the place for fishing boats gather but now Ly Son is the home of about 20.000 people and it is one of the most favorite travel destinations in Vietnam.
HOW TO GET TO LY SON ISLAND?
To get to Ly Son, travelers either choose to take flight from Noi bai Airport (Hanoi) or Tan Son Nhat Airport (Saigon) to Chu Lai Airport in Quang Ngai Province. For those who start from Nha Trang or Da Nang, taking the bus or private transportation will be great way to get to Quang Ngai Province.
The only way to get to Ly Son Island is taking the boat from Sa Ky Port. It is about 50 km from Chu Lai Airport to Sa ky. There is only one high-speed boat traveling from Sa Ky to Ly Son and back. The boat leaves at 7.30 from Sa Ky and 8.00 from Ly Son. If missing this boat, there might be a chance to take wooden boat carrying cargos to Ly Son Island but this will take about 5 or 6 hours. Please note that, showing original copy of passport is compulsory when buying tickets to Ly Son Island.
WHERE TO STAY ON LY SON ISLAND?
Luckily, more hotels and guest houses have been being built on the island for tourists to stay. Ly Son Island Hotel is the biggest as well as the most modern hotel on Ly Son. There are more hotels and guest houses to choose to stay while traveling to Ly Son. Some travelers plan to get to “Little Ly Son” Island where they can do camping to stay overnight.
WHAT TO SEE ON LY SON ISLAND?
There are many places to see on the island. More than just wonderful beaches, visiting pagodas, temples, some historical sites, the flag tower or lighthouse will be great while spending tours on Ly Son Island. Below are some of places to visit on Ly Son.
Hang pagoda is one of the great places to visit on Ly Son. “Hang” means cave as the pagoda is built inside the largest cave on the island. Offering wonderful view to the ocean in front and spectacular mountain at the back, Hang pagoda is great to see.
Mu Cu Islet
Mu Cu Islet is where the lighthouse is, about 3,5 km from the center of the island, Mu Cu Islet is great to see and enjoy wonderful views, nature while traveling to Ly Son Island.
Flag Tower on Thoi Loi Peak
Built in 2013 on the top of Thoi Loi Mountain – the highest one on Ly Son Island, facing to the ocean. This is not only the most famous place but it is also the most wonderful spot to enjoy stunning views of Ly Son and the ocean. It is also the best place to enjoy sunrise or sunset on the island.
WHAT TO EAT ON LY SON ISLAND?
As most of other islands, seafood is the most popular here. Travelers can taste famous dishes like: steam crabs, sea-porcupines soup, steamed oysters…which are cooking in very unique styles by local people. One dish that should not miss is garlic salad. The garlic cultivated on Ly Son Island is famous all around Vietnam and used for export as well.
